The Owyhee River fishes year round, weather permitting, and is located in a high desert canyon, so in the coldest months it may ice up. The best fishing for Owyhee River trout is found during the spring (great skawala hatch) and summer, traditionally June, July and September have been our most productive months. While the brown trout dominate the food chain on the Owyhee, the rainbow trout population holds its own. Though not plentiful, the rainbows here are as fat as footballs and tough to land. Rainbows in the 18 inch plus range are not uncommon. These large trout can be as finicky as any spring creek fish.
Guiding on the Owyhee river is limited to walk and wade, as the river is a small tailwater fishery with good access. Wet wading is not realistic as the water coming out of the dam is very cold. The vast smorgasbord of insects provide the food source for the abundant fish population. Not only are there great numbers of fish, but also great numbers of large fish. The average size of the brown trout are 17-21 inches with a few monsters at 2 feet plus.
Vacationing, meetings, business in Boise, Idaho? Looking for things to do while spending time in Treasure Valley? Spend an exciting day reeling in Owyhee River trout with professional, experienced fishing guides. Enjoy catching 18-21″ trout? Our guides often know them by name! Join us on the Owyhee for a full day of fun!
Most of the whitewater guides choose to stop running the Owyhee at around 1000 cfs. After the water level lowers, the water temperature warms to trigger the smallmouth bass fishing phenomenon. There is a 4 week window between the time the water level starts to decrease and the time the water is too low to float. Yes, there are times when we get hung up on the rock gardens. Yes, at times we walk around the class IV waters. Yes we have fun, and catch hundreds of smallmouth bass! Fishing for smallmouth on this wild & scenic river is as good as the well known John Day River fishing was 20 years ago.
This is rugged country & miles (often times straight up 1000′ rock cliffs) from civilization, so we recommend that you be in good health. There are times when not even satellite service can be found.

Floating along the Owyhee River in Oregon, you pass through astonishing high desert canyonlands with thousand foot rhyolite cliffs and sand castle rock formations. Visitors will marvel at the variety of birds and mammals, including river otters, bighorn sheep and golden eagles. The Owyhee River’s fragile ecological balance requires the utmost respect from its visitors.
We practice pack it in pack it out on everything. Even though this is a Wilderness trip, we do pride ourselves in offering a wholesome and generous menu. No freeze dried food on this one! Imagine having hot fudge Sundaes or ice cold fruit slushies on 100 degree days in the middle of the desert.
These trips are extreme eco friendly fishing trips with one guide per 2 clients. 5 days of wilderness camping at it’s finest. All camp gear is floated in separate gear boats with camps being set by crew daily. Most of our camps on the Owyhee are nice soft sand, similar to the fine sand of the Caribbean. Our water is filtered and there is a weight limit to the amount of gear taken.

There is a small window for floating the river due to the water levels. This trip is perfect for those who want to get away from it all! Normally, our guided adventures are geared toward fly fishing, this particular adventure is geared toward floating, camping, photography and relaxation. Guests are welcome to fish; although they will be responsible for their own fishing gear and tackle. Let us float you down the river, take care of the meals, and set up camp. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy.
